No one knew the inventor's name. Some said he could erase a lifetime of mistakes. Others claimed he could send people to places history had forgotten. Until one man found his door.

The stranger had spent days on the run after being blamed for something he never did. Every place he hid became another place he had to leave. He knocked once. "I've been expecting you," the old man said. "You know who I am?" "Your face is everywhere." The stranger stepped inside.

At the center of the workshop stood an enormous machine. It pulsed with a low hum that seemed almost alive. "So... the stories are true." "People like to believe in possibilities." The inventor walked to a small, unlocked box resting beside the machine and carefully removed a cloth-wrapped object.

"This is the deal," he said. "I can send you to the past or the future. But wherever you go, you must take this with you and hide it. Don't let anyone see it. I'm not going to be around much longer, and I can't leave it here. If it falls into the wrong hands..." He let the sentence hang. "This has to disappear." The stranger frowned. "What is it?" "If you knew, you'd never agree to carry it." The machine came alive. For the first time in days, the stranger wasn't thinking about the people chasing him.
